Kaori Sakamoto (26) made a surprise announcement about her marriage during her retirement press conference held in her hometown of Kobe on the 13th. Here’s a translation of her comments posted on Nikkansports.
Near the end of the press conference, Sakamoto said, “This is a personal matter, but I recently got married,” prompting a wave of surprise and applause from the audience.
Regarding her spouse, she explained, “We met in college. We’re the same age.” She added with a smile, “He’s the complete opposite of me – always calm and thoughtful. But he never forgets to have fun and enjoys doing interesting things with me.’ She clarified that he is not involved in figure skating.
Sakamoto said she had already informed her longtime coach, Sonoko Nakano (73), and other mentors, saying with a bashful smile, “They already knew.” She also revealed, “We registered our marriage on May 5.”
Sakamoto also shared that she had always dreamed of announcing her marriage at her retirement press conference, laughing, “This is what I wanted to do!”
