Shoma Uno reflected on leading and producing his first ice show, highlighting the camaraderie among skaters and his commitment to creating an enjoyable experience for the audience, with a sequel planned for this summer. Here’s a translation of his comments.
Shoma Uno held a stage greeting on the April 4th in Tokyo to commemorate the theatrical release of his self-produced ice show, “Ice Brave Shin-Yokohama Special Edition.” In front of gathered fans, he reflected, “Over this past year, I’ve grown more than I ever imagined. I’ve gained confidence in what I do. I’d never been in a position to provide content for everyone, so at first, I was really anxious and just wanted to do whatever I could to make something good. But after a year, I’ve had so many moments where I realized it’s okay to rely on the fans who come to see us and the skaters who cooperate with me. Now, as you can see, I can even speak in public and live freely (laughs),” looking back on what he gained from producing his first ice show.
During the event, fans requested that costumes used in the ice show be put on display. “Whether it’s possible or not, I think it’s a good idea. I’ll mention it to the staff later,” he responded with a bright smile. Another fan expressed hope for a DVD or Blu-ray release of the show, to which Uno replied with a smile, “I’ll pass that along as well.”
On April 3rd, it was announced that a sequel, “Ice Brave – A TURNING SEASON –,” will be held. “I’m happy to be able to bring another wonderful show to everyone. I want to work hard so that Ice Brave can continue for a long time,” he said, sharing his aspirations. “Continuing to challenge myself has been my motto since my competitive days. I want to take on things beyond what everyone imagines, and I want everyone to enjoy the ice show, so I’ll work with the whole team to make it creative and engaging. I want it to be a show where everyone feels glad they came, and after watching, they feel like they’re moving on to the next stage,” he said.
As both producer and lead, Uno guided many skaters through his first-ever ice show production. He recalled that, especially at the beginning, he often felt tense, but as the main goal was “for everyone to enjoy it,” he gradually found himself enjoying the daily practices as well.
Uno also noted the strong camaraderie among the cast members as a special feature of the show. A sequel, “Ice Brave – A TURNING SEASON –,” is scheduled for this summer. While the content and music are still undecided, the first thing they settled on was the cast. “We all wanted to do it again with the same members,” Uno said, and so the original cast will reunite.
A major highlight of the show was Uno’s ice dance performance with his girlfriend, Marin Honda, which drew much attention. When asked by the audience about safety during lifts, he replied, “I make sure to lower my hips and keep my balance so I don’t drop my partner.” Having once made a major mistake, he added, “Rather than thinking ‘I can do it,’ I always keep in mind, ‘Even if something goes wrong, it’ll be okay,’” emphasizing that safety is his top priority to prevent injury to his partner.
Looking ahead to the second chapter of the ice show this summer, Uno said, “I want it to be an ice show where everyone is a main character, with the passion of a school club activity. The audience’s loud cheers and enjoyment will definitely make it a wonderful show. Not just for me, but for all the members, skating amid big applause and cheers feels amazing.” Regarding the film adaptation of last year’s show, he encouraged, “There are things you can only see live and things you can only see on screen, so please enjoy both.”
