Former world junior champion and professional skater Marin Honda launched her cosmetics brand “Luarine,” inspired by her own experiences with makeup as a source of confidence both on and off the ice. Here’s a translation of her comments posted on Nikkansports.

Marin Honda (24) attended the launch event for her self-produced brand “Luarine” in Tokyo on the 4th.

She unveiled the first products: a serum UV base and a highlighter, presenting the actual items and promotional videos. “When I first held the finished products a few months ago, my hands were shaking so much I could barely hold them. Every time I use them, I’m so happy my hands still tremble,” she said with joy.

A new serum UV base and three shades of highlighter will be available for early purchase at a limited-time pop-up store in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, starting on the 5th, and nationwide from the 18th. Honda, who tested the samples herself many times, smiled and said, “I’m happy to have arrived at products I can recommend 120% from the heart.”

After retiring from competition in January 2024, Honda set out to realize her long-held dream of creating a cosmetics brand. She contacted companies herself and gave presentations using materials she made to resemble an eyeshadow palette. It took about two years to bring the products to market. “I think I’ve only made presentation materials a few times in my life,” she recalled, “but I spoke in front of many people about my passion for the brand, why I wanted to work with this company, and my love for cosmetics. I’m happy I was able to develop products with this company, and I’m glad I took action back then.”

Her competitive career had its ups and downs. After moving to the senior level, she experienced both great attention and difficult times. She stood alone on the ice, and one thing that helped her was makeup. “Standing in front of a large audience with confidence is very important. Makeup helped me feel motivated and became part of my pre-competition routine,” she said, describing how it helped her reset mentally and physically.

The brand name “Luarine” is a coined word combining “Luar” (meaning “moonlight”) and “Marine” (her name, which also means “sea”).

“I’ve put my feelings into the brand name Luarine as well. Since I was little, I’ve always thought makeup was amazing. When skating, it lets me become a slightly different version of myself, and even on ordinary days or when I’m feeling down and don’t want to do anything, just putting on makeup can make me feel positive. That’s what makeup is for me. I hope these cosmetics can become a kind of ‘good luck charm’ for as many people as possible.”
