Loena Hendrickx recovered from injuries and ready to compete with renewed confidence at the European Figure Skating Championships in Sheffield. Here’s a translation of her comments posted on Sporza.

“After a tough training camp, I’m back in shape,” beams Hendrickx, who draws strength from new music. “It felt amazing. I’m super happy to be here again.”

“Now I have the music I’ve wanted for five years. With this new music, I feel free and hopefully can deliver a great program.” The song in question? “Ashes” by Celine Dion. “For my comeback, the lyrics ‘out of ashes’ couldn’t be more fitting.”

“I had a really good season with my previous Celine Dion program. That music speaks to me and warms me inside. It’s powerful music, which suits me.”

A training camp in Miami over Christmas also gave Hendrickx a big lift, helping her finally reach her top level again after a long time.

“I really had to break out of the negative cycle. It was a tough camp, but I’m back in shape,” she nods. Her brother Jorik also saw her make great strides in the U.S.: “We were away from everything and everyone for a while and could work on our program.”

“The first week was tough and we pushed through. That already paid off in the second week.”

“It hurts to say it’s ending soon,” Loena Hendrickx admits. “Even though my body is really done, my heart isn’t finished yet. The choice is very difficult. Maybe I want to go on for another year. At the last Olympics, I said two was enough, but here I am again.”

“I want to skate with joy now. I’ve already achieved everything I wanted. Reaching my third Winter Olympics was my goal, and I worked hard for it. If I perform at my best, anything is possible. But above all, I want to step off the ice with a smile.”
