Yuzuru Hanyu (31), the two-time Olympic men’s figure skating champion now in his fourth year as a professional, is set to make his comeback. Through his PR office, it was announced at 11:11 a.m. on January 11 that his long-awaited new solo ice show, “Yuzuru Hanyu ‘REALIVE’ an ICE STORY project,” will be held for two days in April this year in his hometown of Miyagi Prefecture. Here’s a translation of his comments.
Last August, right after entering his fourth professional season, Hanyu reported, “I’ve decided to take a maintenance period to evolve further!” and entered a period of rest and recharging.
The new “REALIVE” show, building on the “ICE STORY” concept, will revive his past programs “as living works with his current body.” The announcement states, “The time Yuzuru Hanyu has accumulated will once again be etched on the ice with his present self.”
Here is Hanyu’s full comment on his long-awaited return:
“All the programs I’ve created and spent time with are surely alive in everyone’s memories in various ways.
In this era, even if not live, people can watch them over and over, and they reach many people. I’m happy that my programs have become living entities in this way.
That’s why I want everyone to feel that every second in this world, which will never be the same again, is being lived right here, right now.
I hope these unique programs, with no two moments ever the same, will reach each person’s unique sensibility.
On that day, in that place, I will deliver programs that can only be performed at that time, pouring my soul and all my strength into my skating through my current body.
I also hope that, together with everyone’s new breaths, memories, and feelings, my programs will continue to live on.”
In a July 19, 2025 interview marking his third anniversary as a professional, Hanyu spoke of reaching a new frontier, “from zero to one.” The following month, he promised further evolution and entered a maintenance period, specifying that he aimed to return around next spring.
“I’m studying a lot, transforming my body, and will work even harder, so please look forward to it!”
As promised, he is making his comeback at just the right time. On the morning of the announcement, he posted “1.11 11:11” on his official X account, raising fans’ expectations.
