Evgenia Medvedeva shared memories of strict coaching methods in figure skating, describing the use of a rubber blade cover as a disciplinary tool but clarifying that she was never physically beaten. Here’s a translation of her comments.

“When I was about 11 or 12, there were times when things didn’t go well for me. Our scariest weapon is the blade guards. It’s rubber. You put it on the blade so you can walk on tile.

And this heavy rubber – if you’re not doing something right and the coach swings the guards like this (makes a swinging motion), you’d better run far away. Because you never know what might happen. It might fly at you. It might miss. Or it might hit you – you never know.

There was never a situation where I was cornered, beaten, or hit. But there were times when the coach would shout, ‘Medvedeva!’ and guard would fly in my direction.

I did get hit by the guards. But it didn’t leave bruises.

You know, when a dog pees in the corner, the most effective thing is to grab a newspaper that rustles. It was scary, but there was no real beating,” Medvedeva said in an interview with Karen Adamyan.

Thank you for clearing the air Olympics is a very intense sport that both athletes and coaches feel but yes this community was left with questions I’m glad I was right that it wasn’t what people were saying just a coach being intense and I’m sure people will reflect and understand we are in different times no one should be mad at anyone everyone makes mistakes.

Thank you for sharing Zhenya and I’m sure people have reflected and changed we all make mistakes but thank you for clarifying since so many people assumed the situation was like that including myself at some point glad to know it wasn’t :).
