Estonia has one place in both women’s and men’s singles figure skating at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics. At the European Championships, which begin in Sheffield on January 14, it will be decided which of the Selevko brothers will go to the Olympics. Here’s a translation of the article posted on ERR.
“Last year, Mihhail Selevko set new personal records and finished seventh at the home European Championships, but this season he has not yet managed two clean programs in a single competition. His starts in Bratislava in September and France in October were promising, but subsequent international competitions in Finland and Croatia were disappointing.
“It was a good start to the season; the competitions weren’t perfect, but they were pretty good. But then those last competitions – my confidence was gone, and it was hard to work in training. I think training is going quite well. I skate my programs well, but then at competitions it’s a bit difficult,” Selevko told ERR.
Problems with equipment have caused uncertainty in recent competitions. At the Finland Grand Prix, his skate blade broke, and Selevko has been skating with different boots and blades, but now his right foot has started to hurt. At the Estonian Championships, he finished nine points behind his older brother Aleksandr.
“It was a tough time. I had issues with my foot, then I was a bit sick, mentally it was hard, and the last competitions didn’t go so well. But here I’m satisfied that I did almost everything I wanted. Still, there’s a lot of work to do before the European Championships,” said Selevko.
While Aleksandr is preparing for the European Championships in Boston, Mihhail is training in Tallinn. The European Championships in Sheffield, starting January 14, will decide which of the Selevko brothers will qualify for the Olympics.”
