Adam Siao Him Fa is set to compete at the Lombardia Trophy in Bergamo against top-level contenders, including Ilia Malinin and Yuma Kagiyama, as he seeks to recover from a challenging start to the season and regain his confidence. Here’s a translation of his comments posted on L’Equipe.
Just two weeks ago, Siao Him Fa was reeling from the aftermath of a disastrous Masters competition. Following a string of repeated falls, the two-time European champion (2023, 2024) finished in third place at the Masters, behind Kevin Aymoz and Francois Pitot. Dazed and bewildered, the 24-year-old struggled to comprehend what had gone wrong, especially since only a week earlier, he had been consistently executing programs with three or four quadruple jumps. “It wasn’t easy,” he admitted. “I was still sick in the days following the Masters, and on top of that, I broke my skates. It wasn’t until Friday (September 5) that I started feeling better. But honestly, I’m not worried.”
In the aftermath, Siao Him Fa worked with his psychologist to analyze the situation. “I’m not saying we solved the problem, but we’re working on it,” he explained. “Beyond the stress, I was completely disconnected. I had far too many expectations for myself. I withdrew and lost connection with the moment. I wasn’t present anymore.”
Recognizing the need for better communication, Siao Him Fa acknowledged that he has to “try to communicate more with (his) coach.” His coach, Cedric Tour, had commented after the Masters that they might need to adopt a different approach, perhaps pushing the skater more assertively. Whether these adjustments will be enough to get the 2024 World bronze medalist back on track for his Olympic aspirations at the Milan Games remains to be seen.
Aware of the formidable competition at Bergamo, Siao Him Fa views this event primarily as preparation for what lies ahead. “Of course, I know there will be a lot of strong skaters,” he said. “All the more reason to treat this competition as part of my preparation for future events. I haven’t set any specific goals, and I’m not expecting anything. I just want to find myself again, at least a little.”
