Two-time Olympic gold medalist Yuzuru Hanyu (30) reveals plans to take a maintenance period during the 2025–2026 season, aiming for further evolution and promising a spring return in 2026. Here’s a translation of his comments.
On August 15, Yuzuru Hanyu updated his official X account (formerly Twitter), sharing his plans for his fourth season as a professional skater. He stated:
“I’ve decided to take a maintenance period this season to focus on evolving even further!”
Accompanying skate boot and feather emojis, Hanyu explained his approach:
“In this season, I want to make sure that everyone thinks from the bottom of their hearts, ‘This is great!’ I want to make it even better, even greater for all of you to enjoy. I’m aiming to restart around spring next year, and during this time, I’ll study, reshape my body, and work even harder. Please wait for me with anticipation!”
Over the past three years, Hanyu has expanded the scope of his craft, delivering groundbreaking solo ice shows where he serves as the producer and creative director. His most recent tour, Yuzuru Hanyu ICE STORY: Echoes of Life – TOUR, was the third installment of his series, following GIFT at Tokyo Dome and RE_PRAY TOUR.
In an interview marking the third anniversary of his professional career this July, Hanyu described his new artistic path as “moving from zero to one,” reflecting on the evolution of his craft. He also admitted that juggling his work both on and off the ice over the past three years had been relentless, sometimes even leaving him with little time to rest.
Hanyu expressed his commitment to further transformation and set goals for his return next spring:
“I will study a lot, reshape my body, and work even harder, so please look forward to seeing me again!”
He concluded his message with heartfelt determination:
