Olympic champion Gabriella Papadakis has spoken about ending her career. Here’s a translation of her post on Instagram:
“I always thought that leaving competition and ending my career would be easy. It is an inevitable aspect of being an athlete, yet we really do not contemplate it. We tell ourselves it will happen later, it will come naturally. However, the words I write today have been left unfinished for several months. I guess I was waiting for time to give them a calmer tone.
My career has surpassed everything I ever dared to dream of. I explored the world, expanded my boundaries, and learned to understand myself through this wonderful sport. I gave it everything I had, and in return, it gave me countless little treasures in the form of memories, friendships, adventures, and lessons.
All this would have been impossible without all the people who believed in me when I did not believe in myself, who shared their knowledge and trust, and who accompanied me on my journey. I am incredibly fortunate to have met the most talented partner, Guillaume, without whom none of this would have been conceivable.
Competition was the love of my life, and I will always miss it. However, we cannot always control the turns our paths take, and sometimes happiness calls us elsewhere. Experiencing an infinite spectrum of emotions, I close this magnificent chapter of my life to open another. One that is even more beautiful, even more genuine, even more deeply mine.
Thank you to each one of you, whether you have been here since yesterday or have been here forever. Although I do not yet know what it will look like, I hope you will join me in many more exciting adventures.”
