During the Okko broadcast, Alena Kostornaia shared an opinion that judging in Russia is stricter than at international competitions. Here’s atranslation of her comments.
“Q: You, I’m sure, keep an eye on what’s happening on the international scene. How different is the level of competition globally compared to in Russia?
Alena Kostornaia: The competition is always very high in Russia, and unfortunately, you can’t escape it in any discipline. And somehow, I always seem to ‘luck into’ finding myself at the peak of this competition in one form or another. It just turns out that way.
Q: Be stronger, Alena.
Alena Kostornaia: Yes, this actually motivates me a lot to keep moving and improving. But I would like to point out that judging is much stricter in Russia. What I see at the stages and what we generally receive – recommendations at the same test skates – they, of course, differ greatly.
What sometimes counts on the international competitions, in Russia they don’t let it slide at all. Literally any wobble, the slightest imbalance on landings from jumps and throws – immediately you get some hefty deductions. While internationally, it’s a bit more lenient, there’s more support for athletes.
Well, it’s for the best. Because someday, when we get out there, everything will be precisely fine-tuned, very accurate, exactly right. And then special support won’t really be needed, so to speak.”
