In the interview with Roman Kostomarov, Tatiana Tarasova stated that there are no outstanding skaters among the current athletes. Here’s a translation of her comment.

Q: Who, in your opinion, is the most outstanding athlete? Now or throughout your coaching career?

Tatiana Tarasova: I have been coaching since I was 19 years old! My God, how long that is… [I’ll name] pioneers, for example, Toller Cranston, who interpreted the music so… You can’t even say he just skated to the music. He interpreted it in such a way that I still remember it and it gives me goosebumps to this day.

Of course, you remember Belousova and Protopopov. How could you not remember them? When they came out, stood there – and you already knew that something extraordinary about love was about to happen. And they hadn’t even made a single movement yet.

Q: Are there such athletes now?

Tatiana Tarasova: You know, I want to tell you that maybe there are no outstanding athletes now who will be remembered for centuries – and those who have seen them perform live will remember them for the rest of their lives. I think that there are no such athletes at the moment.

Q: Why is that?

Tatiana Tarasova: I don’t know why. Maybe it’s the complexity that has overtaken some acting skills, although acting skills have also grown. The inhuman complexity of quad jumps and difficult twists, which, when they perform them, you perceive differently. You’re simply amazed that it’s even possible to do. You want programs like that – complex, with new elements, but without fearing that they will make mistakes. Programs that are like the old ones: done easily, musically, and telling us about some life, some story. Because now, just inserting an element… I think we’ve already been through that. After all, everyone wants to create a composition.”
