Former figure skater Miki Ando (36) appeared on Nippon Television’s ‘Dancing! Sanma Palace!!’ on the 18th and discussed her daughter’s extracurricular activities. “Powerful Mama’s Unique Education Method” was the theme of the day. Here’s a translation of Miki’s comemnts.

What Ando is passing onto her 11-year-old daughter is the importance of appreciating people. “Especially for skaters, they can’t skate without ice. They can’t practice, and they can’t perform, so I tell her to appreciate the people who make the ice for her.”

Ando teaches skating to children. However, she firmly stated, “I don’t teach my daughter.” She explained the reason was, “I can’t teach her the fun of it. I can only give her strictness”

Ando stated she gets her daughter to engage in seven different activities, but she lets her do only the ones she expresses a desire to learn. This prompted the host to ask suspiciously, “Really?” Ando laughed, insisting, “It is true”, revealing that her daughter is learning figure skating, hip-hop, singing, piano, calligraphy, cram school and drums.

“I want to let her try the things she likes. I want her to engage in all the things she shows an interest in.” The other guest of the show commented how tough it is to make kids practice piano at home, but Ando explained, “At our house, just touching it is enough, we don’t make her practice. It’s okay even if she doesn’t become good. It’s good if it can be useful for something.”

However, she admitted that she couldn’t think the same about skating, revealing: “I have an ‘as long as you’re enjoying it, it’s good’ attitude towards the other activities because I don’t know about them. But I understand skating. I know that the world of sports is not so easy, which is why I become strict.”
