The ice show “Fantasy on Ice” opened on May 24th at Makuhari Messe in Chiba. Yuzuru Hanyu performed two programs, one in the first half and another in the second, which was something fans hadn’t seen for a while. Here’s a translation of his comment posted on Web Sportiva.
During practice on the 21st, Hanyu hit his forehead on the ice, and had to have 2.5 centimeters of stitches. After consulting with his doctor, he limited his jump practice and carefully prepared for the first day of the show.
The first program he performed was the piano tune “Danny Boy,” which he debuted in March at “Notte Stellata”.
“The concept is hope. Within that hope, for instance, there is the past and the future. The hope of the past can be happy memories or a return to the past or pre-disaster era. There are moments where you reach out to such memories, reach out to hope.
Contrarily, there are scenes where you reach out to the future, offering prayers towards the hope of the future. The center of the rink represents the present, with the past being the scene you first see from the stage on the left, and the future being the opposite side. This image was choreographed by David Wilson,” said Hanyu about this program at the “Notte Stellata” performance in Miyagi.
The grand finale of the second half featured Yuzuru Hanyu performing a collaboration with Takanori Nishikawa of T.M.Revolution. The song was “Meteor,” an insert song from the anime “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.”
Hanyu had mentioned in an interview for the show, “I’ve been listening to him since elementary school, so I was surprised to hear he would be participating. I’m both excited and nervous about how the collaboration will unfold.”
In the grand finale, he landed a perfect quadruple toe loop. There was the usual Yuzuru Hanyu, giving it his all. As he left the venue, he shouted “Thank you very much!” to express his gratitude.
