Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara shared what helped them to overcome difficult period of injuries.
“Riku Miura: Communication is key. Without communication, it’s impossible to know what the other person is thinking. Even if you keep your thoughts pent up, they won’t be conveyed to the other person. So we try to discuss even the smallest things.
Ryuichi Kihara: I think trust is extremely important. The sport is gravely dangerous without a relationship of trust, and the female partner wouldn’t be able to entrust herself to her partner. And then we wouldn’t be able to progress as a pair. Aside from that, there’s also a need for mutual consideration.
I think dialogue is important, but if you think of the outcome if you didn’t seize the opportunity, you’ll definitely regret it. If you know that taking the initiative at that moment would make a difference, there should be a discussion about it then and there. That’s how you avoid regrets later. If you think that you should have taken action then, then let’s take action now.
Riku Miura: We’ve been working together for 5 years, and I’ve noticed when there’s something one of us wants to say. So in those instances, I try to ask, “Is there something you want to say?”
Ryuichi Kihara: Actually, asking can be difficult. There are many chances for arguments since we both have our own thoughts. However, instead of seeking the root cause of the mistake, we’ve mostly discussed how we can both improve at that point. I believe it’s gotten much better since then. Could we have done this two seasons ago?
Riku Miura: We could do it during the Olympic season.
Ryuichi Kihara: There were quite a few clashes as we sought greater improvements last season. This season, we came to realize the value of it again through the injury, and it got better. We polished it even more after the Four Continents. We were constantly discussing how we could improve.
Riku Miura: Having a positive coach and partner so that we can all become positive while supporting each other is what I think makes our team strong.
Ryuichi Kihara: I agree. The team being positive and having a strong bond must be our strength. Neither of us are exceptionally better, we cover for each other and the coach helps us. I really do think that the team’s bond is our strength.”
