Minerva Fabienne Hase and Nikita Volodin shared their emotions after winning bronze at the World Championships 2024. Sports correspondent Maya Bagriantseva reports on the words of the German figure skaters. Here’s a translation of their comments.

“Minerva Fabienne Hase: We’re just over the moon, this is our first joint World Championships and we have such a result. Nikita, in particular, this is his first-ever World Championships, and he skates as perfectly as he has been all season, dammit. What more could I wish for? He is the best partner in the world, my winning ticket. The feeling is out of this world when you realize that all your hard work is recognized with such a medal.

Nikita Volodin: The further, the better. We could and should have performed better today. We had not such a lucky experience at the European Championships, so we didn’t lose ourselves after the upsetting mistake.

Minerva Fabienne Hase: I’ll say this again for the hundredth time – none of this would have happened without our coach. Dmitry Savin was with us all the time, he kept repeating like a mantra: “Calmly, one element after another, do not lose concentration, and do not get nervous”. I skated with this mindset, and almost everything turned out well. I am very, very proud of how we handled our nerves and ourselves today.

Savin always teaches us not to think about medals — and then they will come. Now it seems he was right. I have a bronze medal from the World Championships in my hands to validate these words.”

“Nikita Volodin: Of course, I am pleased with how the season turned out, but there is a huge amount of work ahead. The first thing I learned in the new team in Germany is to plan everything. We know in advance what and when we will be doing. Now, our priority is to master the throw flip. We were already making it a year ago, but postponed it before this season; there were just too many other elements we needed to focus on. Next, we want to get all the death spirals and step sequnces in both programs to the fourth level.

When we first came off the ice after the free skate in Montreal, the first thing we heard from Dmitry Savin was ‘congratulations on the start of the new season’. He warns us that the second season in a pair is always harder, there is no longer any newcomer effect – when no one expects anything from us. I don’t know, we’ll see, I hope we can overcome all the difficulties. You just have to calmly do your job and remember: as soon as you step down from the podium, everything starts anew. Everyone is equal, there are no favorites.

We also want to try a new style in the short program; neither Minerva nor I have skated it yet. Minerva’s programs used to be softer and more lyrical, but here there will be more sensuality and even passion. After the World Championships, we’ll stay in Canada and go to Toronto to work on new programs.

We will work a lot on the second score. This year, we focused mostly on elements, we had to make a statement about ourselves as a strong pair. We have not yet fully ‘become a pair’ – I think it takes pairs 3-4 years, and we have only been together for one season. We need to gain experience together – both good and such as we got at the European Championships. Minerva was very upset then, it seems to me, girls in general find such situations harder. They immediately try to take all the responsibility for themselves and torture themselves. Boys react more calmly. I tried hard to support her then, to give her confidence and convince her to forget about it as soon as possible.

Did anyone from the Russian guys congratulate us on the medal? Sasha Galliamov was the first to write, or rather record me a ‘circle’ on Telegram, haha. He says, well done, excellent debut at the World Championships. I am pleased that he follows us, watches our performances and, in turn, I always follow his skates.’ Sports correspondent Maya Bagryantseva reports on the skater’s words.”

Nikita Volodin also shared that Ilia Malinin has inspired him.

“Did I watch Ilia Malinin’s skate? Of course. I think comments here are unnecessary – he is simply making history with an incredible skate. After that, I immediately got inspired, saying “We need to do a quadruple twist and throw.” Minerva tells me to “calm down”, but I can’t, Ilia has already infected me with these thoughts, haha.

If he’s doing his quads, why can’t I throw my partner for 4 rotations? So even for pairs, it works. But seriously, Ilia’s skates motivate millions of people, showing that nothing is impossible,’ Sports correspondent Maya Bagryantseva reports Volodin’s words.”
