Estonian single skater Niina Petrokina, who is recovering from an injury (her left leg fibula broke in December 2023), said that although her leg still doesn’t allow her to do everything she wants, she travels to the World Championships feeling positive. Here’s a translation of her comments posted on ERR.
“Of course, my main goal is not to perform worse than last year, but even better. But one has to look realistically at these things – I still lost two months of my preparation. I didn’t perform my routines as much as I should. Performing a routine is like performing a poem to a large audience. The better you learn the words, the more you practice, the better the performance. Then you don’t think about those words, but deal with the emotional side, and similarly with figure skating routines,” said the figure skater.
Her coach Svetlana Varnavskaja stated that she does not expect great results at Worlds because of Niina’s injury. “I can say that Niina is in pretty good shape, but still, her leg hurts and we can’t do one jump to this day. We changed the elements and their order in our programs. At the beginning of the season the plans were absolutely different, but now we do what we can. Niina is motivated and wants to show her current best.”
“I put a combination with a triple salchow in my routine, but to this day, it’s not yet that consistent because my leg doesn’t hold the way it should, and I hurt myself, or I can’t execute the jump. There is a small risk, because I don’t know how my leg will feel during the competitions, but I am currently practicing my routines as much as possible. We’ll see what happens,” added Petrokina.
