Italian skater Matteo Guarise who competes in pairs with Lucrezia Beccari commented on his victory at the European Championships.

Before transitioning to figure skating, Guarise was a world champion in roller skating.

“I left (roller skating) in 2008 – so help me count how many years have passed since then. Figure skating for me is just skating. On roller skates, on the ice – it’s still skating; it’s my life.

I don’t want to find differences between disciplines because, for me, it’s a daily approach to training. I don’t want to find differences between my previous partners – Sara Venerucci (Guarise skated with her in roller skating), Nicole Della Monica, and Lucrezia Beccari. It’s just evolution.

Perhaps the roller skating world is another world because there is no Russia, China, but there is Spain, Portugal, Argentina – countries that are challenging to find in figure skating.

But I would say that every moment in sports has given me something, made me the person I am now. I like such challenges – I like starting anew with Lucrezia, I like comparing myself with others because I have to force myself to take a step forward. It’s difficult, but I need it, I want it.

At the moment, this (winning at Europeans) was another step, my goal. As soon as I achieve a goal, I change it. I wanted to get to the Olympics – and I’ve been there, and now I want more.

Whether I am on the right path or not I enjoy my life every day. I am very happy, waking up with a smile every day,” Sports.ru correspondent Maya Bagriantseva cites Guarise’s words.

Bravo Matteo! This is a winning approach to life, with or without medals. Growing up as a person and athlete, being kind with other athletes and live sport in a genuine way are what made you different and strong as you are! Best luck for Olimpics.
