Eteri Tutberidze: “I said to her, ‘Kamila, tell me what happened on that day.’ She told me that some volunteer treated her to ice cream and the masseuse treated her to Lipton tea. I was like, ‘Really?”

Here’s a translation of Eteri Tutberidze’s comment regarding Kamila Valieva made in a interview with Leonid Slutsky.

Q: In my amateur understanding, Kamila Valieva is the best single skater in the history of figure skating, encompassing all aspects. You start to wonder, ‘Why does someone with such talent have to go through such trials?’ We can’t predict where all this will lead in terms of her future as an athlete.

Eteri Tutberidze: I don’t even know. I think it has already affected her life. Life doesn’t end on professional sports. It changed her a lot. Before all of this, she was an honest child. When she was questioned, I said to her, ‘Kamila, quickly tell me what happened to you on the day of the short program. Go ahead.’ She told me that some volunteer treated her to ice cream, the masseuse Chekmareva treated her to Lipton tea, and someone else treated her to something. I was like, ‘Seriously? You ate ice cream there, and you had that tea too? Did all of this happen, Kamila?’ She said, ‘Well, I don’t know. I just did that there.’ We’re teaching, teaching.

I think she doesn’t trust anyone anymore. That’s how she changed.

Regarding the fact that she’s so unique, I’ll probably receive backlash from the fans. First of all, maybe all these fan groups should love and respect us, the coaching staff? We created those whom you loved, love, and idolized, enriching a segment of your lives. All this hatred is just foolish.

As for Kamila Valieva, I believe she’s a universal athlete. She possesses a combination of everything. She skates beautifully, and you understand that her glide takes the entire ice. She’s one of the few. Kostornaia skates beautifully, that’s the glide. It can be challenging; it’s not given to everyone. Some feel it, some don’t. She has the glide; she’s naturally flexible and stretched. Moreover, typically, those who are flexible and stretched are not good jumpers. She had and still has triple Axel and quadruples. She’s beautiful, feels the music, and can convey emotions. She’s versatile, and that’s what makes her exceptional.

I don’t know if there will be another athlete like her. There might be other athletes. But we’ve never had and probably won’t have another athlete like her. No matter how hard they try to imitate or be like Michael Jackson, there won’t be another one like him. There was a skater Yuzuru Hanyu, and I don’t think there’ll be another like him. And there’s Kamila Valieva.

What has befallen her is that enormous love has unfortunately turned into hatred.”

The thoughts about this case go in many directions.
Cui bono? Foreign countries? No! There were other 2 girls.

I think, the answer of this doping qestion will stay open for ever. At first the grandfather…now the ice cream and tea. But: There were three girls and there was a Dr. Shiwetsky. Why should only one girl- the best of the 3- take medikaments for doping? We have always the question: Cui bono? The Russian Federation- no. A single person? There ist to think of it. Who was the only one, who was totally obsessed to win? These all are many questions……Probably Kamila was really a victim.
