Alena Kostornaia expressed her outrage at the judging scores at the Grand Prix of Russia. The figure skater competes in pairs with Georgi Kunitsa. At the Grand Prix stage in Omsk, they took fourth place, earning 124.71 points for the free program and 68.06 for the short program.
Here’s a translation of Alena’s comments posted in the Telegram channel of a sports journalist Dmitri Kuznetsov.
“I’m dissatisfied with how our hard work was assessed. It was simply flushed down the toilet,” said Kostornaia.
“How do I assess our performance? I don’t! I’m dissatisfied with everything. I’m dissatisfied with how our short program was judged. I’m just outraged.
In the free program, we had enough energy for the morning practice, but not for the evening performance. But in the short program… How hard we tried and practiced, and how it was judged… I was shocked and bewildered by the scores.
Such a huge difference between the scores of the first and second judges — according to the rules, this couldn’t have happened.
My favorite sport is drowning in a swamp. The world is cruel, unfortunately; everyone thinks about themselves. It’s right, and it’s how it should be, but there’s a sporting principle that contradicts it,” Kostornaia said.
Also Alena Kostornaia believes that her words could lead to a ‘major scandal.’
“Sorry, Alena, you often use the word ‘it,’ like ‘it’ is happening. Can you describe this?
Alena Kostornaia: No. I’m afraid it would cause too much of a scandal. I’m not in the position or state to open my mouth so much.
But the desire, let’s say, to resort to some radical methods, I don’t know, well, there are various federations, many different options, do such thoughts come to your mind?
Alena Kostornaia: There are many options, but for now, perhaps it’s not worth voicing them because we don’t know what the future holds. We don’t know what tomorrow will bring,” said Kostornaia.”
Alena Kostornaia also shared that she has become calmer with age.
“How are you feeling in general? 700 days, they counted, you haven’t competed on the competitive ice. The number turned out to be significant.
Alena Kostornaia: I’ve become more mature; I’ve become calmer. I’ve become more relaxed about it. That’s all,” said the 20-year-old Kostornaia.
