Here’s a translation of Tatiana Malinina’s comments made in the interview for olympics.com.

Olympics: In addition to Ilia, do you work with other students?

Tatiana Malinia: Yes, but they combine skating with their education, training for about an hour a day. To achieve success, you need to train for 3-5 hours a day. The parents of these students decided it’s better for them. So, they skate for an hour a day, and they work with a coach for about half an hour a day. In this amount of time, you can’t do a lot of work, and there’s much they can’t learn. Additionally, a lot depends on finances, how much parents can afford to pay for lessons. We have students who compete in national tournaments, but they haven’t made it to the podium yet. To do that, they need to train more.

Olympics: Are you coaching based on the so-called Russian system or the American system?

Tatiana Malinia: Most likely, it’s the American system. Because you can’t establish the Russian system in America. They don’t have group lessons; you have private lessons. This is the rule at almost all rinks. For example, if parents want their child to have general physical training or special physical preparation, they have to pay for those lessons because the rink doesn’t provide such an option. So, in America, there aren’t as many girls, for example, who can compete with Russian figure skaters. In Russia, they train under the supervision of choreographers and physical trainers, so they have comprehensive lessons.

Olympics: Do you work with Ilia in your free time from coaching other students?

Tatiana Malinia: First, I work with Ilia, and in my free time from working with him, I work with other students. I have to choose between working with my son and working with other students, and I choose my son. I have to sacrifice something.”
