On March 26, 2022, on her own birthday, Satoko Miyahara announced her retirement from competitive skating through social media.
“I had a significant goal to become an all-around skater capable of both jumps and expression. There were times when I realized I pushed myself too hard because my ideals were too high. I want all the junior skaters to cherish their own feelings about why they skate, what makes skating fun for them, and why they continue,” she said.
This season Satoko Miyahara returned to participate in Japan open competition.
“I think I did quite well, actually, following our practice sessions (laughs). I started with building my body and then the process of regaining my jumps. I realized again, ‘Ah, I really enjoy doing skating training,’ and it was an enjoyable period,” Satoko said.
“Since I was going to do the free program again, I practiced as much. I tried my best, recalling my active days and giving it my all. I’ve tried to come up with a jump layout that I can manage somehow. I’ve felt like I can complete the full four minutes of the program, more than I initially expected during practice,” she added about the preparation for the compatition.
“I’ve been practicing to expand my range of expression, understanding the differences in how professionals present themselves. I hope I can showcase the aspects of my practice that help broaden my expression,” Miyahara said.
Her program for this competiiton – ‘Romeo and Juliet’ was choreographed by Stephane Lambiel, describing it, Satoko said “Stephane choreographed my program. It’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ with the theme ‘Love, Passion, and Fate.’ The choreography follows the story throughout the entire program. Especially during the steps and the final choreographic sequence, I intend to express everything, so I hope you’ll see it.”
She expressed her feelings about her performance, saying, “I could immerse myself in the music, striving to express the grandeur of the program more than what I had practiced with the choreography’s movements. I’m delighted to have conveyed the world of this program.”
