The figure skater also commented on not qualifying for the 2022 Olympics in Beijing.
Elizaveta Tuktamysheva: It wasn’t difficult for me; I understood that we had three beautiful and strong girls who qualified for the Olympics. I did everything I could to make it to the Games. I knew it was the right thing because those girls were stronger than me; they had quad jumps. I understood the whole situation, so I accepted it and continued living my life.
Will you try to qualify for the next Olympics?
Elizaveta Tuktamysheva: We’ll see…
What’s the secret to your long career?
Elizaveta Tuktamysheva: My amazing coach (Alexei Mishin), and I love figure skating, I love the sensations during performances, I love preparing new programs, creating something. When you genuinely love something, when you enjoy what you do, it’s so easy – to not stop, to simply continue.
An important thing I understand every time is that I can do something greater. I feel that this is not everything I’m capable of. I have strength, and I must keep going because I know that this is not my limit yet.
You perform a triple axel, which is a difficult jump with a high impact. How do you take care of your body to avoid getting injured? So many girls from the age of 15 really get injured, and you’re in your twenties. 25?
Elizaveta Tuktamysheva: 26
And you’re in perfect shape. How do you take care of yourself to continue skating?
Elizaveta Tuktamysheva: I have a good body for figure skating. I’m not tall, so it’s easy for me to maintain my shape without gaining weight or losing weight. I understand how to eat correctly and what I should eat to stay in good shape. And I have good jumping technique.
If I feel that something is not right, I don’t jump. I only jump if I’m confident that it will be safe because I’m very afraid of getting injured.
Sometimes, when we’re working on quads, I pop a lot of jumps because I’m afraid of getting hurt. And Alexei Nikolaevich (Mishin) sometimes starts shouting, “Come on, rotate it already, try it, you’re popping so many jumps!” And I’m like, “I’m so scared, what if something happens to me…”
You know, I’m so fixated on this, so I think that’s why I haven’t had major injuries because I take care of myself, really protect myself.
