“Everything should be performed in the style of the 80s: ABBA, Boney M. — something like that with a slight touch of LGBT to make it more fun for everyone.” Zhulin and Averbukh about the theme for 2023/24 rhythm dance
Ilia Averbukh and Alexander Zhulin shared their opinions about the new theme for the rhythm dance in the 2023/24 season, which is “Music from the 80s.”
Choreographer Ilia Averbukh told “Match TV” that the new theme for the rhythm dance in the 2023/24 season, which is “Music from the 80s,” will give athletes a wide choice in choreographing their programs.
The International Skating Union (ISU) has selected “Music from the 80s” as the theme for the rhythm dance in the upcoming season. The junior pattern is the rocker foxtrot, and for seniors, it is a pattern-style step sequence (silver samba).
“Indeed, now all pairs in the world will be working on this task set by the ISU. The rocker foxtrot is a compulsory dance that junior pairs will perform. In each senior dance, skaters will perform a step sequence in the new style, and these elements will be evaluated by the judges. As for the stylistic choices, it is broad, and the music from the 80s will provide athletes with a wide range of possibilities for their imagination. Each year, the rhythm dance brings a new mood; for example, last year it was street dances,” Averbukh said to Match TV.
“I myself don’t understand anything yet, so I can’t explain anything. It’s a very complex scheme. I understand that everything should be performed in the style of the 80s: ABBA, Boney M. — something like that with a slight touch of LGBT to make it more fun for everyone.
No, they’re not asking for it explicitly, but it’s implied that it would be nice. The world is moving in that direction… Overall, everything is very vague. The rules seem to have provided some freedom, but at the same time, they’ve left the silver samba pattern — it must be performed by at least one of the partners.
Right now, we’re all a bit shocked and don’t fully understand what they want. But through trial and error, we’ll figure something out,” Zhulin said to “Match TV.”
