Russian Nationals 2017: ice dancers commented on their FD
Russian ice dance drama is over) No changes after the short dance in placement. Here some comments from athletes about their performances in the free dance.
Tiffany Zahorski and Jonathan Guerreiro
The audience was wonderful, we are very pleased to perform here, we liked everything: organization, greetings of an audience. Arena is wonderful. Not everything turned out, not everything was clean, some elements didn’t turn out, but but overall we’re satisfied. In the morning, Tiffany said that she has a fever, we were thinking whether to perform, in such conditions we showed a good skating. – Jonathan said
I have a sore throat, and each of the three days I felt worse and worse. This is not our best skating, but I showed the maximum in these conditions. – added Tiffany
Get well soon, Tiffany!
Elena Ilinykh and Ruslan Zhiganshin
For sure it was our best performance of the season. We’ve been preparing for a long time, changing something. Of course, it was hard to adapt again to our system, but I think we did the maximum we could.
You always think that you can do a lot more than you have done. I think that to this point we come in the absolutely optimal form. The season started hard, totally different atmosphere, different athletes. I think it was hard for us to get along there. When we returned home, though we didn’t planned. We understood that nowhere we are loved like here! In our situation, this is a huge plus when people stand up for you, when they are ready to do absolutely everything. I think in our situation come back is the best thing that could happen to us.
Now it’s emptiness. The world sometimes is cruel and unfair, in my subjective opinion, as well as our sport. it’s necessary to make conclusions from everything, to work more, as usually. That is all that an athlete can do in this situation. Unfortunately or fortunately an athlete cannot affect the politics of the sport at all. It makes us stronger. I think we just have to skate more. – Elena Ilinykh said.
Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov
Tournament passed unmistakably – I mean both trainings and competitions. There were small technical flaws, but overall we are satisfied. Performance today was not the easiest, but the coaches said that it looked differently, and we have improved in lot of things, so we are happy. – Nikita said
We’re very pleased with the start and competitions. We had such a fighting mindset. – Victoria added.
Skaters also stressed that cooperation with Elena Tchaikovskaya added them confidence:
We have worked under her guidance, without any extra move. I think it gave us such inner confidence and a good result.
Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin
I think it’s a New Year present for all our relatives, coaches, fans. For us it is also a great happiness. We are very happy that we got such scores! This is another step forward for us after the Grand Prix, and we are happy with our performance. – Alexandra said.
Thank you very much to all those who cheered for us! This is Russian championship – a difficult and very important start for us. – Ivan said.
Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitri Soloviev
To finish this year with clean skate, the sixth title of Russian Champions it’s the best New Year gift for us, I hope, not only for us but also for our fans. Week ago in the Gran-prix Final we popped a lift, but it was a mistake in terms of emotions. We understand: you can not get upset, then failed, turned out now.
We love to compete, this is our job, our main task. Especially in such arenas like in Chelyabinsk. In general, I thought that there should be held major international competitions, so not only we have to deal with acclimatization, let they try to adapt to local frosts. – Ekaterina Bobrova said.

What is Elena Ilinykh talking about when she says ‘the politics of the sport’?
I think she meant that everything was decided before the competition and actual skating doesn’t mean much at Russian Nationals. I got an impression that she hints that she and Ruslan are not in favore in Russian federation, probably they expected different result.
It’s interesting, because I think Lena and Ruslan skate better than Nikita and Victoria, but there is no stability with them. Can’t imagine that Lena is disliked by someone. Hope they will make right conclusions.
I don’t think it’s about some kind of personal dislike. It’s about support of federation, and here I do understand the federation. They need to get back three spots for Olympics, so they need two stable duos. So they decided to support those who was stable and showed better results at Grand-prix. Not for the first time. I think everyone knew that Russian Natinals results usually reflects the results of grand-prix so you have to be good and ready early in the season. Unfortunately, Elena and Ruslan didn’t give the fed. any reason to support them( They have time more than others to be prepared…..Plus they lost the third place by -1 deduction for the bracelet that fell from Elena’s arm. It’s like everytime something happens(
