Here’s a translation of Evgenia Medvedeva’s commed made for Okko Sport.

“Q: “What do you think about Alena in pairs?”

Evgenia Medvedeva: I agree with Maxim Trankov, who said that people are currently more focused on evaluating individual skating, whether Alena is doing pairs or not. There is still a colossal amount of work to be done on pair elements. It’s great that a former single skater is fearlessly trying pairs. But I think, to compete, for example, with Mishina and Galliamov… Alena and Gosha’s pair elements and Mishina and Galliamov’s are two completely different things.

Of course, you have to start somewhere, and you have to enter the competition, but honestly, I would have waited another season and practiced more. Because from interviews, it’s clear that Alena is deeply upset by low scores.

Q: “What do you think about the statement ‘Our hard work has been flushed down the toilet’?”

Evgenia Medvedeva: It’s a sharp statement, but it has its place, especially if athletes have performed perfectly clean. Yes, there are instances where people were underscored. There’s a concept called ‘trade-off,’ and it even happens between disciplines. When you’ve skated perfectly, and they give you scores, and the audience is silent, in shock. Then you can come out and say, ‘Our hard work has been flushed down the toilet with these low scores.’ But here, there were multiple mistakes, and the judging wasn’t that bad.

Q: “When do you think Alena and Gosha can become competitive for the top spot on the national team?

Evgenia Medvedeva: A couple of seasons, for sure. People in pairs skate for 6-7 years. And here, after just half a year of switching from singles to pairs, they expect gold. That’s impossible.”
