Here’s a translations of Ilia Malinin comments about the possibility of performing a quadruple axel at the World Championships and his attitude towards the attempt of Russian skater Vladislav Dikidzhi to also land this jump.

“I jumped the quad-quad combination just for myself, to distract from training. There’s no point in including such a difficult combination in the program – the risk won’t be paid off by the scores.

I haven’t decided yet whether I will perform a quad axel in the short program. I will probably decide on the day of the skate. Everything will depend on how I feel, whether I have enough energy to go for the maximum content.

I think that for me it’s more important here to perform reliably, without taking risks. There are so many strong skaters in Montreal who get more than 300 points in total – it will be a good competition, and I’m eagerly waiting for the opportunity to compete with them. I like watching other skaters’ performances – I genuinely enjoy figure skating,” Malinin’s words are quoted by Sports correspondent Maya Bagriantseva.

American Ilia Malinin is the first figure skater in history to cleanly perform this jump in competition. In March, Russian Vladislav Dikidzhi landed a quadruple axel during training.

“Of course, I saw Vlad Dikidzhi’s performance of the quad axel. I was truly amazed.

I remember what it cost me to attempt the quad axel in the past – deciding to jump it was not easy from a moral point of view. Vlad performs it with such apparent ease; it’s incredible. It’s great that I was able to inspire someone to do this jump. My goal is to advance figure skating, and I’m glad that someone else has decided to land the quad axel – I hope there will be even more successful attempts in the future.

I’m genuinely happy when someone succeeds, there can’t be any jealousy here”, Malinin is quoted by Sports correspondent Maya Bagriantseva.
