Hubbell & Donohue: dances for season 2016-2017

I was a big fan of Madison Hubbell / Zachary Donohue‘s last season’s short dance, was sceptical about free dance and changed my opinion at the World Championships. That’s why I was very intrigued what they will show this year. Here’s my review on their new dances, showed at U.S International Figure Skating Classic.

When I heared ‘Feeling good’ I had only one thought – oh no, why they skate to such an overused music! Well, at the second part of their dance I was already ok with Feeling good) Because it wasn’t the worst thing in their SD. Madison and Zach have such powerful, soft skating and inner sensuality, so blues is just a perfect dance for them. So, why the hell they don’t have a dance they deserve! Sorry, but starting with the second rythm this dance looks like a program for show or gala. Too much music cuts, it looks odd and there’s no place to show what a great dancers they are! It reminds me of their FD to Great Gatsby OST and here I see the same problems. Zach is as always damn hot, but they just deserve a better choreography! And I have a huge desire to burn Madison’s dress.

Well, I have mixed feelings about this free dance. On the one hand it’s lovely dance, totally in current ice dance trends. I love their skating, love their lines, love their dialog between partners. On the other hand I can’t get over feeling that somewhere I’ve already seen it all. Even not knowing who’s choreographer and who are their coaches you can easily guess) Yes, it’s a style of their coaching group, but I don’t think it’s right to put each their pair into one style, even thou it’s a style of World Champions. Especially a pair with such energy, and visible relationships of man and woman. I really want something sparkling and passionate for them! But maybe they’ll surprise me and by the end of the season I’ll have goosebumps watching this FD. I also like their costumes, such a great shade of grey!

I’m not a big fan of the SD, and I agree about Madison’s dress. She can look so pretty in a nice costume, but this just looks like it was thrown together at the last minute. Too much flappy blue fabric.
The FD looks like a total love story. I don’t think Olivia and Madison’s bf are going to like that too much.

FD is lovely, and I’m ok with a ‘love story’ I just think they deserve more, something unique. In this dance I see a copy of Papadakis and Cizeron, partly Virtue and Moir……

VERY much so. I just hope that they aren’t taking on too big of a task, trying to mimic the World Championships. They are good skaters, but I feel like it might be a case of a junior girl without a 3-3 trying to skate like Medvedeva. I hope that they know what they’re in for.

Much as I like Papadakis and Cizeron, I feel like they’re a little…private in their performances. It’s beautiful, but there’s not much acting going on. It’s fully a performance between the two of them and not with the audience. That so-called “romance” is beautiful and touches the audience, but sometimes I want to see a little more of a “show” going on, rather than just a beautiful couple skating.
I hope that Hubbell and Donohue don’t drown themselves so much in trying to copy Papadakis and Cizeron that it’s unsuccessful. Cross your fingers.

When I saw Papadakis and Cizeron’s Mozart FD for the first time, I was amazed. It was something fresh and new and unique. But even the best things become ordinary if you see them to often. Last year there were a little bit to much of dances in Papadakis/Cizeron’s style. And it happened not because other duos wanted to catch the style of World champions, it happened because this coaching team did such dances for all their pairs! But what good for Papadakis and Cizeron may not be the best choice for someone else. I really hope that at least for Virtue and Moir they will think of something more unique.

Agree. Virtue and Moir have style; to cover it up with Papadakis and Cizeron packaging is a waste.
