Evgenia Medvedeva: “For this season, I decided: I shouldn’t even try”
Evgenia Medvedeva about her career, most valuable medal, relationship with Eteri Tutberidze and plans for the future.
Did I understand correctly that you quitted sports a little?
Evgenia Medvedeva: For this season, I decided: you shouldn’t even try. Because I don’t want to talk about injuries for the thousandth time, but they play the main role. From the experience of other people, who have finished their careers before my eyes, and I’ve seen many, when they announced this, there was universal mourning. Probably, people think she finishes her career – let’s say her goodbye like at the funeral. And everyone starts saying oh she left us like if I passed away.
One life ends, another begins.
Evgenia Medvedeva: Not everyone understands this. I don’t want to disappear. I haven’t left the ice, I appear in the show – now you can see even more of me. During the competition period I appeared on the ice 8-10 times, now I have already skated 48 performances over the summer. I enjoy it, I like to create.
18 years in sports is cool and great. But when you feel: it’s burning in you, you want to try this, you want a new choreography, make a cart wheel on the ice …
That is, you didn’t say goodbye to the ice, but quitted with sports?
Evgenia Medvedeva: At the moment – yes, for this season for sure. If you wait for me at the Olympics, then in the role of the ambassador of the Russian national team, as in Tokyo, although I did not go there. My position remains for Chinese Olympics.
Do you have a good relationship with your coach? They write different things, I want to hear from the first person.
Evgenia Medvedeva: Now yes. What happened after the Olympics should not be disclosed, because the people do not know – these are still personal matters. Now everything is fine – we communicate, see each other, talk, it’s ok.
Have your dreams come true at the moment?
Evgenia Medvedeva: It is foolish to say yes, because no.
What is your valuable medal?
Evgenia Medvedeva: In my first junior season I had a very severe hip injury – it was very hard, very painful. But since I was just breaking into international competitions, I had to prove myself. With this injury, I competed at the Junior Championships and took third place there.
It was really a bad result for me, because I was the favorite to win in that season, but then an injury happened. At that time I was very unhappy with myself, the coaches were unhappy. Through the years I look and think: it was strong. This is a very symbolic medal.
Who is your idol in figure skating?
Evgenia Medvedeva: You shall not make yourself an idol. There were people I looked up to. Learn, repeat like a monkey – to improve, but eventually to create my own style. It is very important. It’s not like when people look at you and say: “Oh, you skate just like Slutskaya! And here: Zhenya Medvedeva skates …” Both are good, but for me it is important that my silhouette, technique, jumps, gliding are recognized without my face.
How do you see yourself in 10 years?
Evgenia Medvedeva: I do not see myself alone. I definitely won’t be alone. With or without children – I don’t know. In terms of career, I hope it will be something creative, perhaps calm. Profitable and figure skating related.
I entered the Higher School of Cultural Policy and Administration in Humanities . In short, a producer. I went there solely for knowledge, I’m really interested in how everything works from the inside.
Do you want to become a producer and then create a show, like Averbukh does?
Evgenia Medvedeva: I want to understand – is this what I want? I love to create, I am interested in making programs, creating artistic images. Sometimes you hear music, you are like: ahh, you have to do something about it.
