Evgeni Plushenko: I believe that Zagitova can skate till the next Olympics and win there
Evgeni Plushenko about Alina Zagitova.
Roman Kostomarov (2006 Olympic champion in ice dance – ed.) suggested that it would be better for Alina Zagitova to finish her career. Do you agree?
– I don’t follow who says what. I don’t want to touch this dirt. There is a specific athlete who must make decisions; this is his career and his life. Alina has already become an Olympic champion, perhaps she wants to become a multiple Olympic champion. Who can forbid her? Finish a career is the easiest way. This can be done at any time. Especially since she has already written her name in the history. But to go and prove that you still can, as Alina did at the World Championships, this is really difficult and hard. And if she learn a quadruple jumps, then it will be very cool.
Is she capable of that?
– Looking at her skating, it is clear that yes, I’m not just saying this. I believe that Zagitova can skate till the next Olympics and win there. Growth is not a problem at all, it’s nonsense. Everything is possible, if to train and prepare properly. An athlete must have faith in the coach, and vice versa. I don’t think that Zagitova should finish her career. My opinion is that you can and should skate for a long time, if you have strength and health.
And the motivation?
– The motivation is strong, to prove again to the whole world, to herself, to the parents, to the coach, that she’s the best. Won – prove again. Set a new record. For example Ronaldo and Messi, they say they have everything. Where do they get motivation? They live this, it is their job, a dream. But they still set a goal, to score 500 goals, 1500 goals.
But they are not world champions yet. And Alina at the age of 16 has every title.
– To become a five-time world champion – this is the goal. I also always had a goal – to perform at the Olympics again, to win the Olympics. You must always have a goal.
