Evgeni Plushenko about ISU Skating Awards: It was necessary to include more athletes in the decisive stage of selection
Plushenko about the results of the ISU Skating Awards.
Evgeni Plushenko: Of course, this award is very necessary, this is the Oscar of the figure skating world, and this award needs to be developed, held annually in different countries of the world. But I’ll say what I didn’t like about it. How can you not give a reward to the girl who first made the quadruple jump, the girl who made the most difficult jump in the world, the quad lutz, the girl who three times got to the Guinness Book of Records? And I’m not saying this because Alexandra is training with me now, I would say the same thing if she trained in the previous team.
It seems unfair to me, wrong, it was necessary to make a nomination for those who become the pioneer in figure skating, and this is an omission.
As for the Best coach nomination
Evgeni Plushenko: I believe that Tutberidze is worthy of victory – she showed herself as a specialist of the highest coaching level. But, since this team positions itself as Tutberidze team, I would give the figure-skating Oscar to the whole Tutberidze team.
I think that such coaches as Alexei Mishin, Tatiana Tarasova, Irina Rodnina should be nominated, why not? This is not a nomination for a specific year, and this is a slight omission of the organizers.
As for Lifetime achievement
Evgeni Plushenko: I am very respectful to Kurt Browning, he was a really cool athlete, he revealed even more as a showman. But I completely agree that the choice of organizers was strange.
We have a great Rodnina in figure skating, there is a Dick Button, there are a large number of Olympic champions. I think legends who had won the Olympics more than once and not twice should have claimed such a nomination. And there are such.
But, since the event is held across the ocean, they also need to promote their owns. Therefore, I understand everything. But this is a test version, the first Oscar in figure skating. We need to develop it, but we need to approach it a little more responsible and fair in many details.
As for Most valuable skater
Evgeni Plushenko: No one can argue with that, Yuzuru Hanyu is a two-time Olympic champion. Arenas all over the world are full of his fans, at the Grand Prix Moscow 50-70% from the entire arena were Japanese fans.
This is a great indicator. I believe that Yuzuru is the number one person in figure skating.
Since Alina Zagitova is the current Olympic champion, of course, she should have been in this nomination. I think that in general it was necessary to include more athletes in the decisive stage of selection.
