Daniil Gleikhengauz: “Combination is not a quadruple jump, it had to be done”
Daniil Gleikhengauz about Anna Scherbakova’s and Daria Usacheva’s performances at the third stage of the Russian Cup in Sochi.
About Daria Usacheva
Daniil Gleikhengauz: Today (in the free program) she had a technical mistake on combination with a toe loop – it was unexpected, because the landing from the first jump was good. We’ll figure it out, but in general, she showed herself very worthy at her first two competitions. She is stress-resistant, she can skate on her maximum.
Commenting on the triple axel, which Usacheva began to learn, Gleikhengauz said: “While it’s in the process, she has a good height, but so far there is not enough rotation – even if she almost lands it clean, there are underrotations. First we need to fully rotate it, then we will talk about landing and then put it into the programs. The main thing is that she trains it, and those who train will succeed.”
About Anna Scherbakova
Daniil Gleikhengauz: Our athletes quite adequately assess their strength, and if they manage to skate nine or ten out of ten in training, they go to competitions without hesitation. If there are mistakes in training, they understand it. At Anya’s trainings, not everything was perfect, and we understood that mistakes are possible, and, unfortunately, it went exactly in this direction.
Commenting on Shcherbakova’s mistake in the short program, Gleikhengauz explained: “The lutz-loop combination requires not only the ability to execute it, but also the right focus, full self-confidence. Every professional skater who makes this combination with both loop and toe loop will tell you that this is a huge difference. For me this minimal difference in the value of these jumps (only a point), it is not justified.
Daniil Gleikhengauz: The performances in Sochi weren’t perfect. Dasha skated very well in the short program, but made a mistake in the free program. As for Anya, in the short program we were very disappointed with the result. The combination is not a quadruple jump, it had to be done, so realizing this Anya was so upset yesterday. Today, from the positive things: the first half of the free program was cool, with the content that Anya showed. The quadruple flip is excellent, with positive GOE. In the second half, there were roughnesses and small mistakes. But so far this is not the peak shape and there is still a lot of work to be done…
This all comes from a lack of competition. Still, for girls this is the second start. An athlete feels differently both his body and emotions when he skates in training and at competitions. When you have a difficult jump, there is a huge surge of adrenaline, and because of this, the body begins to work in a different way, you can not control some moments.
