Alexander Zhulin: “If Kostornaia doesn’t change her attitude and doesn’t understand that she owes everyone, not everyone owes her, then the Olympics are unlikely to happen for her.”
Tatiana Tarasova and Alexander Zhulin about Alena Kostornaia’s free program and performance at the ISU GP Internationaux de France 2021.
Alena Kostornaia about her free program and new image
Alena Kostornaia: I like to experiment, I like to be different. As for the make-ups and hairstyles – I come up with everything myself. I watch how this or that character looks – in the free program it’s Billie Eilish, how she looks at concerts, on the covers of her albums. I see that her style is a challenge to society and not being afraid to be different, to experiment, to look somehow stupid. She is not afraid, she just does it. This brings me closer to her, I make all ideas in accordance with her image.
About triple axel
Alena Kostornaia: I’m satisfied with my performance in general. Axel disappointed. I trained it a lot … Well, okay, not a lot. More than before Canada. The jump was good, I didn’t understand what I didn’t land it.
In general, when I came here, I never did it well. I don’t know why. Maybe I wanted to show it so badly and dwelt on it.
Meanwhile Tatiana Tarasova admitted that she didn’t understand Alena’s program.
Tatiana Tarasova: I don’t understand Kostornaia’s free program. They all love and listen to Billie Eilish. But listening is one thing, and skating a program is another. But I always say that there is something I don’t understand in modern music. It is very difficult to watch this program. This I understand.
And her short New York, New York is just gorgeous.
Alexander Zhulin also shared his impressions
Alexander Zhulin: Unfortunately, after the fall Kostornaia showed nothing in terms of artistry in the free program. She was skating and thinking: “It’s so bad that I failed the triple axel.” Her entire program was gone under this auspices. If she does not change her attitude and does not understand that she owes everyone, not everyone owes her, then the Olympics are unlikely to happen for her. But she is incredibly beautiful and talented.
Sofia Titova: “When I was kicked out from Tutberidze’s group the first time, I was suggested going and working on my triples somewhere else and then return”
