Ilia Averbukh: Helping Medvedeva now was a matter of honor
Ilia Averbukh about Evgenia Medvedeva’s short program for the season 2019-2020.
Ilia: As far as I know, Brian Orser really liked the program. Of course, I think, Zhenya agreed it with him. We worked with her for four years. This year Zhenya asked me whether I can help her as before. I believe that this is a matter of honor to support each other not only in joy, but also in difficult times. Of course, I said yes.
Ilia: The program is choreographed to the music “Exogenesis: Symphony, Part 3” by Muse, it seems to me that it suits her very much. She [Medvedeva] has already shown it to her coach, Brian Orser, and according to Zhenya and her mother, he liked the program.
Our work on the program was Evgenia’s initiative. We worked together for four years, and helping her now was a matter of honor. I understand perfectly well that the upcoming season will be more difficult for Evgenia than the previous one, because the girls from Eteri Tutberidze’s group will join the battle. We started this way together, and it would be not a man’s behaviour to back off now, we will go together as long as she would like to skate.

Ilja, thank you. You were a great ice dancer, you are a great coach and a true friend. I like to see Jewegenja scating, but don’t you agree, that it would be better, she would start in the future for another country- Armenia perhaps- mother’s tongue/father’s land? The young well ice jumping scaters in Russia will not give an adult scater the samllest chance for starting in international events in the future. The age for senior level should be higher: 18 years as in reality/in law. Seeing an adult women scating ist so beautiful. The development in the sport is in my opinion not good. It is an art – not only ice jumping. The highest difficulties don’t let space for a very good choreography.
I don’t think it’s even possible for Evgenia to represent another country. The Federation will never give her a release.
