Czech figure skater Georgii Reshtenko, who placed eighth at the Olympic qualification event, reflected on missing a spot for Milan-Cortina 2026 by just 3.92 points, expressing mixed emotions about his performance and the judging outcome. Here’s a translation of his comments.
Czech figure skater Georgii Reshtenko (22) shared his thoughts with Sport-Express after finishing eighth in the men’s singles event at the Olympic qualification tournament. Reshtenko missed a top-five finish – the cutoff for earning a spot at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan – by just 3.92 points. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Reshtenko later switched his sporting citizenship to represent the Czech Republic.
“I took to the ice with the right mindset and fought until the very end for every element. After my skate, I felt like it should have been enough. But it turns out it wasn’t,” Reshtenko said. “As for the person who finished fifth and earned the Olympic spot… honestly, I don’t even want to comment. If the judges think he deserved it more based on today’s performance – and that that’s the kind of figure skating they want to see – then what can I say? In every aspect, I was better than him, and today, I was also better.”
The young skater expressed conflicting emotions about the event:
“I have mixed feelings after this competition. On one hand, I’m disappointed, but on the other, I feel like I’ve started the season well and am moving in the right direction.”
Reshtenko acknowledged that he cannot influence judging but remained proud of his effort: “I can’t change the judges’ decisions. The only thing I can do is commend myself for how hard I fought and prepare diligently for the next competitions this season,” he concluded.
