Belgian figure skater Nina Pinzarrone, 18, has suffered a fracture in her foot during training this week and will temporarily need to wear a cast. Just over a month since the previous season ended, Nina Pinzarrone has sustained an unfortunate injury. She broke a small bone in her foot during training. While she needs to wear a cast, surgery is fortunately not required at this time. Here’s a translation of her coach Ans Bocklandt’s comments posted on Sporza.
“During a basic off-ice training session, she twisted her foot while doing a very simple jump,” her coach, Ans Bocklandt, explained. “We immediately heard a crack. She then went to the emergency room, where they performed a scan and confirmed a small fracture in her pinky toe.”
According to Bocklandt, the injury didn’t come entirely out of nowhere. “Her foot had already been weakened by the pressure and pain she had been experiencing earlier. She had been receiving multiple pain relief injections, which likely contributed to the weakening of her foot.”
“At first, the diagnosis is always a heavy blow,” said Ans Bocklandt.
Currently, Pinzarrone’s foot is in a cast. “She left for a trip shortly after the injury, but it’s obviously not ideal for her. She’ll return tomorrow and undergo another scan. Only then will we determine the next steps for her recovery.”
The initial preparations for her rehabilitation are already underway. “We’ll start by training her core and arm muscles without putting any strain on her foot. From there, we’ll gradually progress to skating on the ice — but the final say will always come from the doctor.”
Still, Bocklandt finds a silver lining. “One positive is that Nina requested her two new programs from the choreographer in advance, so they’re already ready for when she resumes training.”
Additionally, the timing of the injury is relatively fortunate. “It’s currently a quiet period in the skating calendar, so she didn’t have any competitions scheduled. The timing could have been much worse, but, of course, we would have preferred things to go differently.”
“I’m hoping this injury won’t have too much of an impact, especially mentally, because that initial diagnosis can be a tough blow. But we’re here to support her, reassure her, and help her rebuild step by step.”
