In the interview at the World Team Trophy, Yuma Kagiyama spoke about past season. Here’s a translation of his comments.
“There were many competitions where I had a lot to reflect on, and in general, I often delivered unsatisfactory free skates,” Kagiyama admitted. He rated his performance as “around 30 points.”
Still, there were positive developments: “My short program (SP) has become more consistent, and at the World Team Trophy, I attempted the (quadruple) flip. There was so much to learn from.” At this event, with the Olympic season in mind, Kagiyama took on new challenges, such as incorporating the quad flip into his SP layout.
Speaking about the responsibility of being Japan’s leading male skater, Kagiyama said: “It’s important not to run away from pressure but to face it head-on. Like Sakamoto (Kaori), or even Hanyu-san and Shoma-san, they all faced that pressure and delivered great performances time and time again. This season has been a learning experience for me in figuring out how to deal with pressure. Next season, I want to stay focused on what I need to do while continuing to adapt to those challenges.”
