Adeliia Petrosian shared whether she ever feels the desire to quit figure skating. Here’s a translation of her comments.
“Q: Achieving any dream requires hard work and sacrifices. How have you explained these “must-dos” to yourself?
Adeliia Petrosian: As a child, I saw things differently: I loved skating and never even considered quitting figure skating. My first crisis happened when I was 13. At the time, it felt like nothing was going to work out for me in the sport, that all my effort, the exhaustion, and the pain were for nothing, and that all the other girls were stronger than me. My mom convinced me not to give up and to continue.
It wasn’t easy — she had to work hard to convince me. She believed in me and promised that I would master quadruple jumps; I just needed to be patient. And a year later, I was already landing toe loops, loops, and had even learned the axel and flip.
Q: How often do you feel like quitting, and what helps you stay on track?
Adeliia Petrosian: It happens. Fatigue builds up, injuries appear, and weight can spiral out of control. In those moments, it feels like I don’t have the strength to fight anymore. I just want to lie down, eat, and leave my body in peace without pushing it to exhaustion.
But then, I imagine having a conversation with Eteri Georgievna (Tutberidze). Going to her and saying, “I’m quitting,” isn’t so simple — doubts immediately arise in my mind, which means the desire to quit isn’t serious and is just exhaustion speaking. When you’re truly ready to quit, you do it. But if something still stops you, it means you’re capable of continuing.
Q: If you could write a letter to your younger self, what would you say?
Adeliia Petrosian: Hold on. Endure it. It’s worth it,” said the two-time Russian figure skating champion.
Adeliia Petrosian also expressed her desire to “make a breakthrough” on the international stage.
“The biggest competitions have passed me and our Russian athletes by. Of course, I want to break into the international arena already.
We’ve endured for a long time, we’ve waited patiently. I want to experience the emotions and impressions that we should have — hopefully in the future,” said Petrosian.
