2015 World bronze medalist Elena Radionova commented on the technical level of women’s skating at the 2025 World Championships i Boston. Here’s a translation of her commenet.
American figure skater Alysa Liu won the World Championship, Japan’s Kaori Sakamoto claimed silver and Mone Chiba took bronze.
“The level of the participants has remained roughly the same as it was before the suspension of Russian athletes. Quad jumps are still a rarity — aside from Amber Glenn, I don’t recall anyone performing them in Boston. Essentially, the skaters are showing the same content that we did nine years ago at the World Championships in this same city.”
“Liu’s victory at the World Championships is a sensation. According to her, she herself didn’t expect this and thought that making the top 10 would already be an achievement. It’s an incredible story because we remember how Alysa performed exceptionally well as a junior and was competitive against our girls. But then she quit figure skating, and now she’s not only returned but also won the World Championships.
If she was executing ultra-C jumps, it would take time to regain those, but it’s certainly possible. Competing at home is always easier and more enjoyable, and the support of the audience helps. However, to establish absolute dominance, ultra-C jumps are essential, though they come with additional risks.
I think it was a rare occurrence that Sakamoto made mistakes in the short program — she’s usually a very consistent skater. By the Olympic season, she will be in excellent shape.”
