In a conversation with Sports correspondent Maya Bagriantseva, Ilia Malinin shared his emotions after his performance in the short program at the 2025 World Championships in Boston. Here’s a translation.

The American figure skater won the short program at the Boston competition with a score of 110.41. Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama placed second (107.09), while Mikhail Shaidorov from Kazakhstan took third (94.77).

“I was honestly surprised — I was really nervous before my performance today. That rarely happens to me. But then the music started playing, and I pulled myself together.

The atmosphere in the arena was crazy — the audience started cheering while I was still skating my program, and by the end, it was a full-blown storm of applause. I’m so happy for Yuma Kagiyama — I stayed by the ice to watch his skate because, well, how could I miss that? Saturday is going to be intense.

I slightly changed my training process before the World Championships. I won’t reveal all the details, but recently, I’ve been focusing more on small nuances because I understand there’s no such thing as insignificant details. After the Grand Prix Final, where I attempted seven quad jumps in the free skate for the first time, I thought a lot about how to evolve. I didn’t perform well at the U.S. Nationals afterward, so I felt it was time to make some changes.

Will I attempt a quad axel in the free skate? I never announce my jumps because I enjoy keeping it a surprise for the audience,” Malinin said, as quoted by Sports correspondent Maya Bagriantseva.
