Yuma Kagiyama (21) revealed that he will not perform the quad lutz at the World Championships (March 24-30, Boston, USA) which is critical for securing spots at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics. Here’s a translation of his comments posted on Nikkansports.

On April 4th, he held a public practice session, where he meticulously adjusted quad jumps like the salchow and flip. He also showed a new hairstyle, reflecting his desire for change just three days earlier.

According to Kagiyama, he feels his condition is gradually improving, “There are bad days, but basically, I’m stepping onto the ice every day with the mindset of ‘I will do my best every day,'” he recalled with a smile.

With less than three weeks left until the World Championships, Kagiyama, who included the quad lutz in his programs at the University Games and the Asian Games earlier in the season, has decided not to attempt this risky jump at the upcoming competition, which aims to secure the maximum three Olympic spots, saying, “I can’t take any risks in order to get three spots.”

He emphasized that this is not about avoidance, focusing instead on performing three types of quads and other elements proficiently. “Even with two toe loops, a flawless performance can easily score over 200 points,” he acknowledged.
