Last year’s champion, Momone Chiba (19) finishing sixth with an overall score of 195.08 points. Here’s a translation of her comments posted on Nikkansports.
Chiba had been showing symptoms of gastroenteritis since the night before the free skate and missed the 35-minute official practice session held in the morning. She gritted her teeth through her free skate performance and, upon finishing, knelt down on the ice. She revealed her poor health condition in an interview shortly after, reflecting that she had “used up all her physical strength.”
Still, she reflected, “They told me, ‘Since you’re competing, give it your all till the end,’ and I was prepared to do just that. I was able to skate through to the end with that mindset.”
“It’s really frustrating that due to health issues, I couldn’t perform at my true level. It made me realize just how crucial it is to maintain the right conditions and health to be able to express all the hard work I’ve put into training. Going forward, I want to manage my health thoroughly.”
Last year, she ended up in seventh place at Worlds saying, “Before I knew it, I was nervous and then it was over.” This season’s Worlds will also determine the spots the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics. To secure a maximum of three spots, the combined placements of the top two competitors must be within the top 13. “I want to give my all to secure those spots,” Chiba expressed.
