At the 2025 Four Continents Championships Kazuki Tomono (26) placed third in the short program with a score of 79.84 points. Here’s a translation of his comments posted on Nikkansports.
“All of my jumps had pretty good timing and flow, but the salchow felt a bit too airy, which was a concern. Despite that, I tried not to overthink, focusing solely on the timing and momentum. But, how should I put it, in the end, it might have been a tad too early.
However, it wasn’t the kind of tension that leads to a breakdown; rather, it was a new kind of ‘off’ feeling, if I can say so. It was like, “What was that?” with those jumps. The feel leading up to the jumps was absolutely perfect, so I don’t have a negative impression of it; I think I can carry a positive image into the free skate. This season, there has been a tendency for mistakes to accumulate in the free skate. I wanted to balance both programs if possible, but now I’m thinking of the free skate as making up for past mistakes. I’ll switch gears and go into the free skate without any worries,” Kazuki told.
“Well, maybe I was a bit nervous today,” when interviewer mention that Tomono looked a bit tense.
“I went in calm, but as I mentioned earlier, I was a bit nervous. Nonetheless, I managed to perform decently, but the scores didn’t improve much. Every little mistake this season really impacts the score. It wasn’t so much about panicking as it was about not completing the quad-triple combination cleanly. I took a minus one point there; if that had been executed properly, scoring an additional 2 or 3 points, it could have made a difference of about 4 or 5 points overall.
Regarding the second toe loop, it wasn’t exactly hesitation… but whether to go for a double or triple. I thought attacking triple was good, but I really wanted to nail it.”
After a day of rest, the free skate is scheduled for the Feb 22nd. “I’ve practiced quite a bit for the free program. I hope to end well because all’s well that ends well. I aim to approach it lightly without putting too much pressure on myself,” Kazuki told.
