Amber Glenn on her Team USA younger teammates calling her “mommy.” Here’s a translation of her comments reported by Sports journalist Maya Bagriantseva.
“Skating is a small community – it’s almost like family, let’s say like distant cousins, and I am maybe like a cool aunt.
The reason why “mommy” comes out sometimes is because I make sure everyone has snacks, take care when somebody needs a bandaid, hairpin or hairspray.
I always carry around a giant duffle bag everywhere – so I have everything anyone may need.
I am quite a bit older than most of them and I’ve been open about my mental health so If they are struggling with anything, or they are seeking the advice – they are able to come to me anytime.
I feel this is where it comes from – and that has been one of the most important aspects of my skating for many years now because it’s something I wish I had when i was younger. I am really grateful and blessed younger skaters see me as that.
But I always make sure to keep boundaries, that people have their space – I am not trying to insert myself into a situation that does not need it,” told two-time US National champion Amber Glenn.
