Wakaba Higuchi (23), who finished forth at the Grand Prix Final commented on her performance and next goals. Here’s a translation of her comments posted on Nikkansports.

“Looking at the score sheet, there were a few attention points, but other than that, I think I managed to pull it together pretty well. Also, during the spins I thought ‘this is bad,’ and indeed, the levels dropped, so I want to be careful about these really small mistakes,” Wakaba reflected on her performance in the free skate. “The salchow turned into a double, but aside from that, I think I skated very calmly. I believe there were no under-rotations, so that was good.”

“It was more like right before going into the turn on my right foot, it got a bit shaky, so the direction felt a bit uncertain,” she give some details about the mistake on salchow.

She also admitted being tired after the skate, saying “I was really tired. I couldn’t stand up and it was just like practice (smiles).”

“As I was the first to skate, I thought about time management even during the six-minute warm-up. The free program is something I can skate with a lot of confidence, so I thought if I remained calm, it would be fine,” she answered the question what she was thinkibg before her skate.

“Since the other jumps went well, I felt regret about the salchow. But including the short program leading up to the Nationals, I think this has been a really good practice competition, so in that sense, I am very satisfied,” Wakaba told.

The journalist also asked her how was it revisiting the Finals after seven years, to which she replied, “I entered the competition and practiced with a completely different motivation than I had seven years ago, so I think I was able to skate without feeling too much unnecessary pressure.”
