Figure skater Sofia Samodelkina (17) announced that she is training in Kazakhstan. The Russian Figure Skating Federation approved Samodelkina’s transfer under the Kazakhstan flag in May.

“Dear friends, you know that I had problems with my leg before and after the Championship of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and three weeks of the training process were missed. Then there was a recovery period. I have now been training in Kazakhstan for two weeks. The decision for me to train abroad was made jointly by the Figure Skating Federation of Astana City, the Republican Federation, Evgeni Viktorovich (Plushenko), and Yana Aleksandrovna (Rudkovskaya). Evgeni Viktorovich and Yana Aleksandrovna and I continue our cooperation and friendship.” Samodelkina posted on her Instagram.

The Figure Skating Federation of Astana City also commented on Samodelkina’s change of coach.

“The Astana Figure Skating Federation announces that Sofia Samodelkina has left the ‘Angels of Plushenko’ club and as of September 1, 2024, will no longer be collaborating with Evgeni Plushenko. After more than a year of diligent work in the team of the celebrated athlete, we have decided to continue our training at the Specialized Children and Youth Sports School No. 2 of the Akimat of Astana. We thank the ‘Angels of Plushenko’ club and Evgeni Plushenko and Yana Rudkovskaya personally for their work. We wish the club success in continuing its efforts to strengthen its team and prepare for upcoming competitions, remaining true to its goals and traditions.

In October, Sofia will head to Los Angeles for a try-out and internship with Rafael Arutyunyan – the coach of Olympic champion Nathan Chen, as well as the world figure skating star Ilia Malinin. Sofia will continue to collaborate and maintain her friendship with Yana Aleksandrovna Rudkovskaya and Evgeni Viktorovich Plushenko. The decision to switch to another specialist was made by the federation and Sofia together with them,” reported the Astana Figure Skating Federation.

  1. No war says:

I think Sofia is trying to ‘erase’ connections with Russia such that she becomes accepted as Kazakh figure skater. Being Russian / having connections with Russia is perceived as negative today. Russians are simply hated. But I could be wrong about Sofia’s motive regarding the move.

  2. Casual Observer says:

Yeah, America has stolen and allured, under false promises and deceit, men and women from under countries, simply to feed their ego since they can’t get their act together and raise up some quality, consistent skaters. Oh yes, and not to mention, they support and encourage betrayal of one’s mother nation. Shameful.

  3. No war says:

Many of the decent American skaters were trained by the Russian coaches. Immigration of smart, hardworking and talented individuals has made America great.

  4. Casual Observer says:

What I find ridiculous is that Russians will come to the US for work, school, training, in this case trainingg, since it’s ’better’ mean while the US can barely cough up a few decent skaters…and get smashed in the Grand Prix, Worlds, and most any international competition

    • FS Gossips says:

Well to be completely fair, Sofia has Kazakh citizenship, her mom is from Kazakhstan. And she doesn’t take anything away from US figure skaters since US coaches train anyone who pays for training. So she doesn’t take someone else’s place. Kazakh Federation is paying for her trainings with Raf.

  5. No war says:

It’s ridiculous how western propaganda has made All Russians evil. Pretty convenient to have common enemy… And no, US has never caused any wars..;)

    • FS Gossips says:

Huh? I haven’t seen any bad comments towards Sofia and her try-out with Raf in the English speaking resources. Only wishing her luck. The only negative was actually coming from Russian speaking resources where people were commenting on her bad shape at the Kazakh National champ this summer or said that she doesn’t look interested in training hard and things like that.

A wise move, good for her…
