Mao Shimada started her international season at the Junior Grand Prix in Riga by winning the event. Here’s a translation of her comments.

“There were aspects that were frustrating, but under any circumstances, I am happy to have brought the gold medal back to Japan,” Shimada said.

Her regrets were related to not being able to regain her best form before the competition. She had been in good condition while training in Japan, but her form deteriorated suddenly after arriving at the venue. “I collapsed, and I couldn’t correct it from there,” she admitted.

Despite winning, unsuccessful attempt to perform triple axel and quadruple toe loop left her with lingering frustration. “I was confident that I could nail the axel for sure. The quad isn’t as certain, but I can land it when I’m in good condition. Though it is gradual, my success rate has improved compared to last year,” said Shimada.

Having won the World Junior Championships twice in a row, Shimada’s goal for this season is “While I do want to win at the Juniors Worlds, my main goal is to perform to my satisfaction.”
