Kaori Sakamoto showed her short program for 2024/2025 season at the “Dream On Ice 2024” ice show. Here’s a translation of her comments.

Kaori Sakamoto performed her short program “Resurrection del Angel / La Muerte del Angel,” featuring a Tango piece for the first time in competition programs.

“I tried to use my experience from last season’s program to express the gentle part in the first half, and to show my own strength in the second half when the tempo picks up.

Although the rink was a bit small this time, I think it’ll be a program that gain on speed once we get into competition size, and I’d like you to see that.

It’s not particularly difficult, but it’s my first time doing a tango in a competition program, so I think it’s part of the challenge leading up to the 2026 Olympics, which is exciting,” said Kaori.

“What I’ve done in past exhibitions has been tango, but it’s more like ‘tango-like’. However, for this short program, I had choreography emphasizing details such as my fingertips, gaze, and facial expressions. I think it’s a bit different from the tangos I’ve done before,” said Sakamoto talking about the comparison of her new short with her new exhibition program “Poison.”

“This year for the short program, I want to put more emphasis on expressions. It often happens to me that when I concentrate on jumps, I tend to forget some other choreography a bit.

Among them, what I’m really sure that I must fix is the major choreography movements. My hands move in the parts where elaborate movements continue, but in the major parts like ‘extend your hand forward,’ my hands die a bit.

So, this year, I aim to express an energy that comes out from my fingertips throughout the two minutes and fifty seconds. I want to move with care for the details, not just moving around.”

Speaking about the next season, she shared her goals, “This season is a pre-Olympic season, so I want it to lead firmly to the next. Of course, the results are very important, but I also want to make sure the content is good. Last season, there were quite a few mistakes, spins, and step oversights, so this season, I want to have cleaner performances and make sure it leads into next season.’
