A number of European federations have supported the simplification of programs in figure skating. This was reported by TASS based on the proposals voiced out at the ISU congress.
At the ISU congress, taking place from June 10 to 14 in Las Vegas, a proposal to reduce the number of jumping elements in singles’ free skates from seven to six, allow repeating one jump three times, replacing one spin with a choreographic spin will be considered.
“Figure skating is a unique combination of sport and art. Over the last few years, the technical side of figure skating has developed at a very fast pace.
It’s time to focus on the artistic and creative aspects of this sport. To make this possible, it’s important to give figure skaters time to combine elements with choreography and give skaters the opportunity to demonstrate a creative approach and innovation.
The main goal is to entertain the audience, and we believe that the proposed changes will provide more opportunities for this. Norway will support the proposal”, stated the delegate of the Association of Speed Skaters of Norway.
The Swedish Figure Skating Federation also stated that it “strongly supports the proposal put forward by the technical committee.”
“We believe that this develops our sport in the right direction. It opens up opportunities for more creative and entertaining programs”, added a representative of the organization.
“We would also like to welcome this proposal from the technical committee because it gives more freedom to skaters and, hopefully, will bring more variety to our program. Therefore, we also agree with the idea of considering the entire package of changes only in one direction – to give skaters more freedom in programs”, said the delegate of the Italian Ice Sports Federation.”

How to marginalize the sport. Because of these federations figure skating might become the only sport that literally devolves, just because they are unable to bring skaters on the top level. So they keep the logic “if I can’t, no one can”. There is still hope when it was postponed by two years but I don’t have much hope these lousy feds would change their mind.
