Here’s a translation of Ilia Malinin’s comments made in an interview with Japanese media and posted on Sports Graphic Number Web.
“I don’t particularly feel regret. Adam (Siao Him Fa) had a lot of pressure as it was a competition in his home country. The point difference wasn’t significant, and I knew he performed very well. But I focused on going to the Grand Prix Final without putting too much pressure on myself. Of course, I can deliver even higher-quality performances, but the goal was achieved,” said Ilia about placing second.
“Last season, I attempted the quad axel with the ambition of making a mark in the record books. I thought that if I successfully executed it with high quality, it would be bring more points. However, the attempt did not turn into as many points as I expected. A failure in the quad axel could result in lower points than a clean triple axel, so I decided to refrain from attempting it this season. I had hoped to push and evolve the sport, inspiring other skaters as well. However, if I can’t get the judges’ recognition, the risk may not be worth taking,” said Malinin about not attempting quad axel.
